Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm passionate about recycling scrap metal, car parts and wood into fun and wonderful sculptures of various textures, colours, shapes, curves and sizes.

I like to create and design sculptures from recycled parts and materials. Metal car parts, wooden frames and recycled items, that are aged and/or broken, have a variety of textures, colours, shapes, curves, sizes, and the way they look sparks my imagination. They inspire me to construct wonderful, fun, and beautiful sculptures. I want my sculptures in locations that are accessible for the community to view and enjoy. If my sculpture gives you inspiration to be confident; to create your own piece of art; to laugh or even frown, then I have achieved one of my goals.

What does your work aim to say?

There is beauty and life in a lot of scrap metal or wood or anything that has been thrown away or discarded. I want to give objects a second chance.

Who (or what) are your biggest influences?

I've been looking at Picasso's assemblage works.

Local WA artist Tony Jones.

I've admired artists and sculptors who are involved with outdoor exhibitions at Rockingham, Cottesloe, and Dunsborough.

How do you overcome creative blocks?

The best way for me, is to pick up pieces and just put them together. Just start anything.

Don't worry if you have no plan or design, just start something. It is amazing how something will just seem to materialise.

How do you stay motivated in your art practice?

I enter exhibitions and the deadlines really make me work towards something.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

One thing to remember is to never compare yourself, or your works, to others. What you create and make is unique to you. And you are at a different level from other people.

And every step of the way, you are always learning new things.

Some people have been doing this type of work for a long time and you may have just begun. We are all at various levels and different steps on our journey
